Praia dos Estudantes is located in the town of Lagos, in the Ameijeira de Baixo area. It is close to the urban center and is nestled between cliffs, which gives it a sheltered and unique environment.
It is composed of small pockets of sand, separated by rock formations that extend into the sea, creating distinct coves along the coast.
The most distinctive and recognizable feature of this beach is a stone arch that connects two rock formations directly above the sand. This arch creates a scenic image much sought after by visitors and is a landmark of the local landscape.
Although popularly known as the "Roman arch", its origin does not date back to classical antiquity. In fact, it was part of the structure of a fort that existed at this location and collapsed following the great earthquake of 1755. This detail gives the arch historical and symbolic value.
The sandy area of Praia dos Estudantes is small and may feature coarser sand or sand mixed with small stones and shells brought by the tide.
The waters are typically calm and transparent, making them pleasant for swimming, although their temperature can be a bit cold. The protection offered by the cliffs helps keep the sea tranquil in this area, making it suitable for bathing.
A unique feature is the tunnels excavated into the adjacent rock formations. One of them allows passage between the different sandy pockets that make up the beach, adding an interesting element to exploring it on foot.
Historically, this place was known as Praia da Formosa, a name that evokes the natural beauty of the landscape it offers.
The current name, Praia dos Estudantes, does not necessarily reflect the majority of its visitors, who include a diverse public. However, its sheltered location and calm waters make it an inviting space to enjoy the coastal environment.
