Careanos Beach is located in the area known as Três Castelos (Three Castles), part of the locality of Praia da Rocha, in the municipality of Portimão. It is nestled beneath a continuous line of imposing cliffs that define it. Access to the sandy beach is via a steep staircase that descends the cliff, being the only way to reach the beach directly by land. At the top of the cliffs, there is a pedestrian path that allows visitors to appreciate the surrounding coastal landscape.
One of the most striking features of Careanos Beach is the scenery of the cliffs that border it. These cliffs display a rich palette of colours, with hues ranging from reddish, ochre, and vivid red, contrasting with lighter areas. The composition of the rocks reveals the local geology, with distinct materials, including sandy and clay formations, but also more resistant biocalcarenites. In the latter, an abundance of marine fossils can be found, testaments to the geological history of the Algarve coast, adding a particular natural interest to the landscape.
Careanos Beach tends to be quieter than some of the neighbouring beaches, presenting itself as a smaller and more secluded sandy area. The high cliffs contribute to this feeling of refuge and tranquility. Along the sandy stretch, various caves, indentations, and rock formations sculpted by erosion can be found, inviting exploration, especially in the eastern area. At the eastern end of the beach, a peculiar rock separated from the cliff stands out, its shape evoking the image of a small fortress, making it a unique scenic point.
The waters that bathe Careanos Beach are generally calm and crystal clear during the summer months, making it suitable for swimming. However, in the eastern area, there are some submerged rock formations that should be noted. At low tide, the sandy area becomes more extensive and allows for walking along the base of the cliffs, exploring caves and natural passages that become accessible, offering a different and interesting perspective of the coast and its geological formations.
