Praia do Túnel, also known as Praia do Peneco, is located right in the heart of Albufeira's old town. Situated at the base of the golden cliffs that characterise the Algarve coast, this beach is integrated into the vibrant atmosphere of the Fishermen's Quarter (Bairro dos Pescadores) and the transition to the town centre. Its central location makes it an easily accessible meeting point from the urban area.
The beach's popular name comes from one of its most distinctive forms of access: a tunnel carved into the rock that directly connects the town centre to the sandy beach. This passage creates a unique and characteristic entrance to the beach. There is also another vertical access option, the Peneco Elevator, which allows visitors to descend or ascend from the top of the cliff to the beach, while simultaneously offering an interesting perspective of the coastal landscape.
This beach features an extensive sandy area, with fine, golden-toned sand. It is flanked by imposing cliffs that rise above it, creating a striking natural backdrop. The coastline here allows for pleasant strolls along the water's edge, enjoying the sea breeze and the ocean view. The size of the sandy area generally accommodates the flow of visitors, even during peak periods.
Praia do Túnel is known for its lively atmosphere and its proximity to Albufeira's urban life. It is a suitable place to relax in the sun, take a dip in the coastal waters, or simply observe the beach's dynamics. Sea conditions can vary, being calm at times and having some swell at others. A portion of the sandy area extends alongside a pedestrian promenade, ideal for a seaside walk.
