Located near Sagres, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, Praia do Telheiro is situated in a cove along the coast. It has the distinction of being the last beach on the west coast before the famous Cape St. Vincent. Its surroundings are integrated into the protected area of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
Praia do Telheiro is a place of particular interest for those fascinated by the forces of nature and the Earth's history engraved in its rocks. Here, a remarkable point is found where different geological formations meet.
One can observe the dramatic contrast between the dark, wrinkled rocks of older origin, which come from the Vicentine coast to the north, and the layers of more recent rocks, such as reddish sandstones and light limestones, which characterize the southern area. This convergence of geological worlds creates an unusual and visually stunning landscape.
Surrounded by robust cliffs, Praia do Telheiro presents itself as a natural bay with an extensive sandy area. The surrounding landscape offers an interesting contrast: the green of the vegetation on some slopes contrasts with the more arid and rocky tones that extend in other areas. The rock formations, sculpted by the action of the sea and wind over time, give the place a wild character and remarkable scenic beauty.
Due to the access, which involves traversing a trail to reach the sandy beach, Praia do Telheiro tends to be a quiet and less frequented spot, even during high season. This characteristic makes it a sought-after refuge for those who value peace and a more direct contact with nature.
Its natural beauty attracts different types of visitors, from fishermen and nature lovers to those who practice water sports, particularly surfing, taking advantage of the conditions the bay offers. The remote and wild atmosphere, especially outside the bathing season, gives the beach a unique and untouched environment.
