Praia do Submarino (Submarine Beach) is located in the Prainha area, part of the town of Alvor, in the municipality of Portimão. It is nestled at the base of the characteristic cliffs of this Algarve coastal strip, near the geographical area known as Ponta de João de Arens. Its position, sheltered between escarpments, gives it a more reserved environment.

Natural Formations

The landscape around Praia do Submarino is notable for its impressive rock formations. The cliffs that define it are composed of natural openings, small caves, and rocks with singular shapes, molded by the continuous action of the sea over time. The beach's name comes from one of these rocks, which stands out in the water for curiously resembling the shape of a submarine.

The Beach and the Sea

The beach's sandy area is relatively small, with a semicircular configuration, nestled directly beneath the cliff. The waters in this area tend to be very clear and often calm, benefiting from some natural protection from the coastal surroundings. The easternmost part of the beach is generally considered more suitable for swimming, as it has fewer submerged rocks compared to the western side.

The Tide and Access

The experience at Praia do Submarino directly depends on the tide conditions. Access to the main sandy area and the possibility of exploring passages through the rock formations are limited to the period of low tide. As the tide rises, the sandy space significantly decreases, and the rocky accesses become submerged. It is essential to be aware of the rising tide's time to ensure safe exit from the beach. The access path from the top of the cliff requires attention and some care.

Essential Information

Given its more isolated and natural character, Praia do Submarino has no support infrastructures on site. There are no lifeguards on duty, nor are there sanitary facilities or points to acquire essential goods. For safety, it is advisable to keep some distance from the base of the cliffs due to the possibility of small landslides and to exercise caution when swimming in the absence of supervision. Due to its secluded nature, this beach is known to be frequented by naturists.
