Praia do Mato is situated in the parish of Ferragudo, municipality of Lagoa, on the south coast of Portugal. This small sandy area fits into a recess of the cliff, facing south, with a direct view of the Atlantic Ocean.
The surroundings are marked by limestone cliffs, punctuated by Mediterranean vegetation, which create natural viewpoints over the sea and delimit access to the cove.
The shell-shaped sandy area is bordered, to the west, by three grottoes of different sizes, whose arched entrances emerge from the rock. To the east, areas of ancient collapse are revealed, testaments to the continuous wear caused by the tides.
At the base of the cliff, there is a natural arch that projects over the water, allowing it to be crossed by swimming or by a light boat, depending on the sea conditions.
Due to its difficult access by land, Praia do Mato retains a tranquil and almost untouched atmosphere, an invitation to direct contact with nature. The combination of cliffs, clear water, and silence makes this place a point for observing the movement of the tides and the light patterns on the sea.
On the upper rocks, it is common to see people fishing from the cliff edge, keeping alive a traditional practice of connection with the coastal environment.
