Martinhal Beach is located in the Martinhal area, east of Sagres, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo. It lies on the Atlantic coast and benefits from some natural protection offered by Ponta da Baleeira. This beach is situated within the landscape of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, with cliffs marking its eastern boundary.
The sandy area of Martinhal Beach is known for its extensive size and breadth, especially in the central part. Behind the sand, there are dunes and typical wetland vegetation that stretch through the valley. The beach can feel the North wind blowing through the wide valley, which sometimes makes it suitable for sports like windsurfing. The waters are generally calm, inviting bathers.
A short distance from the coast, approximately 600 meters away, the Martinhal Islets can be seen. These limestone islets are a point of underwater interest. Their submarine caves and the diversity of marine life make the area appealing for activities like diving.
The Martinhal Beach area also holds remains of ancient human occupation. Ruins of an important Roman era pottery production center were discovered near the beach. On the islets opposite, there are also remnants of tanks used for salting fish, also dating from that historical period.
