Praia do Carvalho is situated in the Benagil area, in the municipality of Lagoa. It is sheltered between high cliffs, which gives it a unique atmosphere. Access to the sandy area is made in an unusual way, through an opening excavated in the rock itself. This position on the Algarve coast distinguishes it from many other beaches.
The path to Praia do Carvalho's sandy area begins with a descent of stairs leading to a tunnel. This tunnel was excavated into the cliff and features marine fossils on its walls, an interesting detail for those who pay attention. Traversing this tunnel is the only way to reach the beach by land. It is important to note that the tunnel steps can be uneven or have sand, making access challenging for those with reduced mobility.
Once at Praia do Carvalho, visitors find a stretch of golden, fine sand. The beach has a shell or V-shape, completely surrounded by imposing cliffs. This natural feature offers shelter and a more contained environment. The waters are usually clear and calm during summer, inviting visitors to swim.
The landscape of Praia do Carvalho is defined by its rock formations. In front of the sandy area, a larger rock stands out in the sea. On the cliffs flanking the beach, erosion has sculpted different forms, including a kind of natural "window" in the rock, which frames a view of the sea and the beach itself. The presence of these cliffs, although scenic, implies the need for caution, as there is a risk of rockfall.
The clear water of Praia do Carvalho is suitable for activities such as swimming and snorkeling, allowing observation of marine life near the rocks. The sea depth increases relatively quickly from the shoreline. Some people use the cliffs as a starting point for jumping into the water in areas where the depth allows, a practice that requires caution and is not officially encouraged.
Local tradition holds that the beach's name is linked to a captain named Carvalho, who allegedly owned this area in times past. This detail adds a historical note to the location's identity.
