Praia do Cão Raivoso is situated on the coast of Benagil, in the municipality of Lagoa, nestled in a deep cove between high rock buttresses. This secluded spot faces south, allowing for direct exposure to the Atlantic Ocean.
The immediate surroundings are dominated by cliffs of golden and orange hues, sculpted by erosion, which form abrupt rocky walls and a cave south of the sandy stretch.
The small sandy area creates an atmosphere of isolation, where only the sound of the waves and the gentle murmur of the wind can be heard. The water displays turquoise-blue shades and retains an unusual transparency, with no presence of algae near the shore.
On the rocky slopes, small patches of low-lying vegetation find space between fissures, highlighting the contrast of colours between the soft green of the plants and the ochre of the rock.
The cave behind the beach, with its irregular ceiling and walls speckled with dark patches, owes its genesis to the constant wear of the sea. Within this space, remnants of ancient sinkholes that penetrate the interior of the cliff can be observed.
The vertical faces of the buttresses show layers of fossilized marine sediments, revealing the geological history of the region over millennia.
The sloping terrain preceding the sandy area invites appreciation of the horizon, where the sea merges with the sky. On this beach, the continuous movement of the surf creates shimmering reflections on the rocky walls.
Visitors can feel the amplitude of the space, often without encountering anyone else on the beach, which reinforces the peaceful sensation and the direct connection to the power of the ocean.
