This beach is located in the municipality of Lagos, in the Algarve region, positioned immediately west of the famous Ponta da Piedade. It is sheltered in a small cove, which provides it with natural protection from stronger currents and winds. The cliffs that surround it are a dominant element in the landscape.
Praia do Barranco do Martinho features a modest-sized, semicircular sandy area. The size of the visible sand area varies significantly with the tides, potentially doubling during low tide. The waters in this cove tend to be calm, ideal for a relaxing swim.
The natural beauty of this beach is enhanced by the rock formations that frame it. The coastal cliffs are prominent, with warm tones that contrast with the blue of the sea. On the western side of the sandy area, a large boulder stands out near the waterline. To the east, the cliff bordering the beach houses a natural arch, sculpted over time.
Being generally less frequented than other better-known beaches in Lagos, Barranco do Martinho offers a more _peaceful_ and _secluded_ environment. The sense of seclusion, provided by the surrounding cliffs, invites moments of greater tranquility and direct contact with nature.
Reaching Praia do Barranco do Martinho involves descending a path that can be considered a bit challenging, with some incline. It is advisable to wear appropriate footwear, such as trainers or shoes with good grip, both for the descent and the return, thus ensuring greater safety along the route.
There is a popular belief that this cove once served as a refuge for smugglers due to its isolated and discreet location. This idea lends a touch of mystery to the beach, allowing one to imagine the stories that these waters and cliffs hold.
