Praia do Barranco is situated at the bottom of a valley, forming a sheltered bay in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, near the village of Hortas do Tabual. Access to this location is via a dirt track, which contributes to its more remote and peaceful character.
This beach features a considerably sized sandy area, especially visible at low tide, extending for about 200 meters. On its western side, a small dune field develops. The bay is delimited by light-toned limestone cliffs at the ends, which show erosion caused by water. The valley slopes surrounding it are covered with natural vegetation, such as juniper scrubland, and rocky outcrops. It is common to find the characteristic rolled pebbles on the sand, which visitors use to build small shelters.
The waters at Praia do Barranco are generally calm and clear, due to the natural shelter provided by the bay. Although their temperature can be cool, they are inviting for swimming during the warmer months. The seafloor of this location, with its diversity of rocks, attracts divers interested in observing underwater life.
Praia do Barranco stands out for its serene and secluded atmosphere, remaining away from the more crowded beaches. It is a place sought after by those who appreciate tranquility and contact with nature in a wilder state. The relaxed environment leads some visitors to take advantage of the isolation for the practice of naturism, which is tolerated on the beach. It is common to see people accompanied by their dogs enjoying the space. The construction of small circular shelters with stones on the sand is a common practice, serving as protection against the wind and creating cozy spots for relaxation.
