Vale Figueiras Beach (South) is situated on the coast of the municipality of Aljezur, integrated into the Bordeira area. It is set within the natural landscape of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, notable for being nestled in a valley with high slopes. It is a place that maintains a natural and less developed character.
This beach offers a vast sandy expanse, stretching for over a kilometer. Depending on the tide, the sandy area can increase considerably, extending northwards. The southern side, in particular, tends to be quieter and offers ample space for those seeking a calmer and less crowded environment.
The beach is framed by high cliffs displaying remarkably folded rock strata, bearing witness to ancient geological processes. The slopes and cliffs are covered with characteristic regional vegetation, such as heather, rockrose, and strawberry trees. During rainy seasons, a small watercourse may flow onto the sand. The air sometimes carries the resinous aroma of rockrose warmed by the sun.
The Atlantic Ocean here frequently presents strong swells and currents, characteristics that make it a popular spot for surfing, suitable for various experience levels. The conditions may make swimming less inviting for some. The extensive sandy area and the trails on the cliffs are ideal for long strolls and hikes, offering panoramic views of the coast. It is also a sought-after location for sport fishing.
Characterized by a more serene environment, this beach attracts both those seeking waves for surfing and those who appreciate the tranquility of a spacious and natural setting. Despite being known, it remains relatively uncrowded compared to more urbanized beaches in the region, allowing for the discovery of more secluded spots, especially in its southern extension.
During the bathing season, the beach has lifeguard surveillance. There are no direct support facilities on the sandy area, so it is advisable to bring what you need for your stay. It is recommended to maintain a safe distance from the base of the cliffs due to the risk of collapse.
