Situated in the Porto de Mós area, in the municipality of Lagos, Praia de Porto de Mós is nestled at the mouth of a valley. It is flanked by imposing cliffs that define the coastal landscape. From the top of the western cliffs, there is an observation point where one can contemplate the vast Algarve coast, extending beyond Praia da Luz, with the horizon reaching the Sagres area.
To the east, in the distance, the characteristic rock formations of Ponta da Piedade can be seen. This location offers wide views over the ocean and the coastline, being one of Lagos' more southwesterly-oriented beaches.
Praia de Porto de Mós stands out for its extensive golden sandy beach. As one of the largest beaches in the Lagos region, it provides ample space for visitors, even during peak times. This vastness invites long walks along the waterline.
The high cliffs bordering the beach reveal particular geological features, composed of layers of marl and argillaceous limestones with different shades. To the west, light grey colours predominate, while to the east, more ochre tones appear, heralding the formations of Ponta da Piedade. These cliffs are the habitat of resilient flora, adapted to the proximity of the sea, such as samphire or saltwort.
In certain areas, where water flows, typical reed vegetation can also be found. There is a local tradition that attributes medicinal properties to the clay found in these cliffs. A small stream also flows into the beach.
The waters that bathe Praia de Porto de Mós can present different facets, varying between tranquility and the presence of waves, depending on sea conditions. This characteristic makes it a popular spot for those seeking waters with more movement in the Lagos area. The waters are generally clean and clear, inviting a swim, but it is advisable to pay attention to the possible presence of submerged rocks, especially at low tide.
In the past, a small coastal defensive structure existed in the vicinity of the beach. This battery, built in the 18th century, was part of the coastal defense system.
