Cacela Velha Beach is located on the eastern Algarve coast (sotavento algarvio), opposite the picturesque village of the same name. This beach is part of the barrier island system of the
Ria Formosa Natural Park
. Currently, the sandy area constitutes an island, separated from the mainland by a salt marsh and lagoon area, which contributes to its unique environment.Officially designated Praia da Fábrica in some places, this stretch of sand is mostly known by visitors as Praia de Cacela Velha, being the easternmost beach in the Natural Park.
The beach boasts a considerably extensive sandy area, stretching for more than a kilometer. This space offers ample zones to enjoy the sand and sun, even during periods of higher attendance.
Along the sandy area, a natural dune system is observed. The beach landscape is not static; it transforms according to the action of the tides and the intensity of the winds, revealing different aspects with each visit.
The waters in this area are generally calm and shallow, making the beach suitable for swimming and family activities. The water temperature at Praia de Cacela Velha tends to be slightly milder than at other beaches in the Algarve.
In the area known as Praia da Fábrica, which corresponds to one of the ends of the sandbank, there is lifeguard surveillance during the bathing season, enhancing safety for those who choose this part of the beach.
The influence of the tides is a central element in the experience of Praia de Cacela Velha. At low tide, the coastal landscape changes significantly, with the formation of natural pools and small lagoons on the sand.
Access to the sandy area is mostly by boat, this being a characteristic form of access to the place. Depending on tidal conditions, it is sometimes possible to cross on foot through the Ria, a walk with water up to the waist or knees, connecting the mainland to the island's sand.
Praia de Cacela Velha is recognized for its tranquil and peaceful environment. Despite receiving visitors, the extensive sandy area allows finding more isolated zones, conveying a sense of peace and, at times, an almost deserted place.
The natural setting, with the Ria Formosa Natural Park as a backdrop, contributes to this serene atmosphere and invites moments of relaxation by the sea.
Although the beach is the focus, a visit to this area is completed by the panoramic view available from the high part of Cacela Velha village. From this elevated point, one gets a comprehensive view of the beach's sandy area, the Ria, and the coastline.
The landscape observed from the village, which includes the historic fort and the river mouth on the opposite bank, is one of the distinctive scenic elements of the place and allows appreciating the beauty of the Ria Formosa and the beach's position.
