Situated in Altura, in the municipality of Castro Marim, this beach stretches along the southern coast of the Algarve, near the border with Spain. The sandy shore is protected by a dune cordon that disappears into the horizon, offering a sense of isolation even during busier times. In the vicinity, a gentle transition unfolds between the sand and a patch of Mediterranean vegetation, composed of pine trees and brambles, which accentuates the natural character of the location.
With nearly 300 meters in length, the beach stands out for its fine sand and light color, creating a sharp contrast with the blue of the sea. The dunes form gentle reliefs that alternate with small depressions, providing occasional shaded spots. The sea generally remains calm, with moderate waves, and the water temperature is pleasant for most of the year, making swimming inviting even outside the summer peak.
Access is via a system of wooden boardwalks that cross the dunes, facilitating circulation to the sand without damaging the vegetation. There is also a dirt track for those who prefer a more direct path. Parking is limited, with capacity for about fifteen vehicles, so it is advisable to arrive early to secure a spot. There is no supervision or permanent facilities, which reinforces the sense of freedom.
During low tide, small pools and sandbanks emerge where it is possible to observe the activity of those collecting coquinas or clams, reflecting a local tradition linked to artisanal shellfish harvesting. The tides also reveal details of the sandy bottom, conducive to a diversity of marine species near the waterline, making the location interesting for those who enjoy exploring with a snorkel or simply appreciating nature by the sea.
