Praia das Escaleiras is located in the Porches area, municipality of Lagoa, within the region known as Crastos. It is nestled in a small natural cove, surrounded by coastal cliffs that give it a more secluded atmosphere. Its name, "Escaleiras" (Stairways), is associated with how the sandy beach is accessed, typically via a descent through stairs carved into the cliff.
This location is characterized by a small natural cove where coastal rock formations converge, creating a sheltered environment. The sandy area is small and shaped like a shell, contributing to the feeling of seclusion.
The cliffs framing the cove are a distinctive element of the landscape, with their rocky walls exhibiting shapes sculpted by the sea and wind over time. On the western side of the beach, there is a natural sinkhole (algar), a sea cave, which is a point of interest for those exploring the coast by sea.
The presence of palm trees at the top of the cliffs, visible from the sandy beach, adds an exotic and almost tropical note to the beach's environment, something unexpected on the Algarve coast. This feature, combined with its location in a small cove, helps to create a space with a particularly tranquil atmosphere and a greater sense of isolation.
