Praia da Senhora da Rocha is located in the Porches area, in the municipality of Lagoa, in the Algarve. It is flanked by imposing cliffs that create a sheltered environment.
The most striking geographical feature is the rocky promontory on the western side, which extends into the sea and delineates the beach, serving as a visual landmark in the coastal landscape.
Atop the promontory that protects the beach, lie the remains of an ancient Fort of Nossa Senhora da Rocha and a small Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha. This site has a long history associated with coastal defense and religious worship.
The chapel, believed to have existed since at least the 16th century, survived the 1755 earthquake, unlike the original fortress. It is an ancient place of worship, with its image of the Virgin and possible older architectural elements inside, such as columns thought to date from the 3rd or 4th centuries.
From the promontory, the view over the ocean and the coast is wide and inviting. The beach's sandy area, although of moderate size, offers a space surrounded by cliffs, which can be pleasant on windy days.
It is common to see colorful fishing boats resting on the sand, an aspect that maintains the site's connection to fishing activity and contributes to the characteristic scenery of the beach.
A particular feature of Praia da Senhora da Rocha is the existence of a tunnel carved into the western cliff. This pedestrian path offers a direct connection to the neighboring Praia Nova.
Crossing this tunnel is an interesting way to explore the rocky coastal structure and access another sandy area without having to go around the promontory.
Annually, on the first Sunday of August, the local community celebrates a religious festival dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Rocha. One of the highlights is the procession that carries the image of the Virgin from the top of the promontory down to the beach.
This celebration is a testament to the strong devotion and historical connection of the population, particularly the fishing community, to this place and its patron saint.
