Praia da Rocha is located in the urban area of the same name, in the municipality of Portimão, Algarve. The extensive sandy beach is situated between the mouth of the Arade River, to the east, and a coastline marked by imposing cliffs, to the west. This position gives it a vast beachfront flanked by the built-up area and natural rock formations. Some elevated points in the surroundings offer wide panoramas over the beach and the Atlantic Ocean.
This beach is known for its large size, being one of the most extensive sandy beaches in the Algarve. It boasts over one kilometre in length and a considerable width, which provides ample space. The sand has a golden hue and is bathed by waters that, under the light, reveal different shades of blue. The natural setting is characterized by warm-coloured cliffs that protect and flank the beach, along with unique rock formations that punctuate the landscape.
At Praia da Rocha, one finds the Fort of Santa Catarina, a historic 17th-century structure. Built with the purpose of defending the entrance to the Arade River, it now functions as an accessible viewpoint, offering views over the beach and the marina area. At the opposite end, the Three Castles Viewpoint provides an equally interesting perspective over the sandy beach and the rocks emerging from the sea. At this viewpoint, the Portuguese pavement with its traditional "wide sea" design enhances the space.
The dynamic of Praia da Rocha varies throughout the year. During the summer months, the beach is highly sought after, presenting a lively atmosphere. Outside of peak season, it tends to be a quieter place. It is a beach that welcomes different visitors, including families who find space for activities on the sand and in the sea. Its vast expanse allows for the practice of various beach sports, such as football and volleyball, for which there are specific areas. Sea conditions can change, with days of calm waters and others with swell suitable for sports like surfing. Along the beach, a boardwalk over the sand facilitates movement and access. The quality of the water and sand is recognized by the attribution of the Blue Flag, and the beach provides accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Throughout its history, this sandy beach has been the stage for significant competitions, such as the Beach Soccer World Cup.
