Ponta da Areia Beach is located at the easternmost point of mainland Portugal, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António. It is situated on the left bank of the Guadiana River estuary, precisely where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, marking the natural border with Spain.
This geographical position offers a unique perspective, with views encompassing the final course of the river, the open sea, and the coastal landscape of the neighboring country, highlighting its role as a hinge between two Iberian nations.
The beach stands out for its vast and continuous sandy area, stretching for approximately 1.7 kilometers. This wide space is delimited at its ends by jetty structures, with the eastern one being particularly notable for its considerable extension reaching out into the sea.
To the north, Ponta da Areia Beach is flanked by the dense vegetation of the Mata Nacional das Dunas Litorais de Vila Real de Santo António (Vila Real de Santo António Coastal Dunes National Forest), creating a natural and preserved backdrop that complements the coastal landscape.
Due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Guadiana River, the waters in this area exhibit particular characteristics, tending to be more sheltered and with mild temperatures. The confluence of the river's fresh water with the ocean's salt water creates a unique environment.
The vast sandy expanse contributes to a sense of space and tranquility, making Ponta da Areia Beach an ideal spot for relaxing walks or simply enjoying the peacefulness of the place, away from more crowded areas.
Ponta da Areia holds significant geographical and symbolic value as it is the beach that marks the beginning of the Portuguese coast from the east. Its immediate proximity to the border line evokes the historical connection and interaction between Portugal and Spain via the Guadiana River, which has served as a route for communication and exchange for centuries.
