Mareta Beach is located right in the village of Sagres, integrated into the wide bay that embraces the locality. It is considered the first south-facing beach on the coastline, counting from the westernmost tip of the Algarve. Framed by imposing limestone cliffs at its edges, it offers a view of the promontory where the Sagres Fortress is located.
With a sandy stretch extending for about 700 to 800 meters, Mareta Beach is one of the largest in the Sagres region. Its location in a bay sheltered by the surrounding cliffs provides it with particular protection against prevailing winds and rough seas. The water tends to be calmer than at other beaches in the area, making it suitable for peaceful swimming, with the bottom gently sloping. The sandy area features fine sand, although with the presence of small pebbles in its rear part. It is important to be aware of some dispersed rock formations in the water.
The cliffs bordering Mareta beach are composed of limestone rock, displaying notable geological features. Large cavities excavated in the rock can be observed. In the underwater area of the cove, there are caves that attract enthusiasts. On the rocky karstic platforms along the coast, adapted coastal vegetation, such as sea thrift, can be found.
Being located directly in the village of Sagres, Mareta Beach is quite popular, especially during the summer months, attracting many families due to its generally calm waters. Outside of peak season, the atmosphere tends to be more tranquil. The bay offers conditions for various sea-related activities, being a popular starting point for kayak tours or for diving, particularly to explore the submerged caves of the cove. In the winter months, when the swell increases, it is also sought after for surfing. For those who prefer a less busy environment, the eastern part of the sandy area is usually quieter.
