Located on the east bank of the Arade River estuary, Praia da Infanta is situated in the Azinhaga area, belonging to the town of Ferragudo, in the municipality of Lagoa. It faces the entrance of the estuary.
Access to the beach is via a steep staircase, located on the southern part of the sandy area, which descends the rocky cliff.
One of the most striking features of Praia da Infanta is its strong dependence on the tides. During high tide, the sandy area becomes completely submerged by water, making it inaccessible.
Therefore, to fully enjoy this space and its sandy area, it is essential to take into account the tidal cycle, visiting it when the tide is low and the sandy area is exposed.
The sandy area of Praia da Infanta is small, characterized by the presence of light sand mixed with pebbles and rock formations. These elements are the result of natural collapses from the cliffs that flank the beach.
The natural surroundings are dominated by steep cliffs, covered at the top by vegetation, particularly pine trees. To the north, a rocky outcrop extends into the sea, continuing into a small submerged structure. At the base of the nearby cliffs, there are cavities and small caves that complement the coastal landscape.
From the top of the cliff that frames Praia da Infanta, before descending the staircase, a privileged viewpoint over the surrounding landscape is obtained.
Particularly noteworthy is the view extending over Portimão Marina, situated on the opposite bank of the Arade River, offering an interesting perspective on the dynamics of the estuary.
The location of Praia da Infanta, at the mouth of the Arade River, is part of a historically relevant context for the region. Near the sandy area, stands the Fort of São João do Arade.
This fort, a defensive structure originating in the 17th century, played a strategic role in protecting the river bar and the surrounding area, being a landmark in the local landscape and a testament to the military past of the Algarve coast.
