Praia da Ilha do Farol is located on one of the barrier islands that are part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It occupies the western section of a long sand spit that stretches between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria lagoon. Upon arriving at the island, visitors first encounter a small and picturesque settlement, which must be crossed to access the sandy beach. Its position offers a scenic duality: the open sea on one side and the serene landscape of the Ria Formosa on the other.
This beach stands out for its vast and continuous stretch of sand. With fine white sand, it extends for a considerable distance, offering ample space to visitors. Although the area closest to the settlement and the lighthouse concentrates most people, just a short walk along the sand to the east reveals stretches of beach where tranquility prevails and a sense of isolation can be enjoyed, even on the busiest days.
The waters that bathe Praia da Ilha do Farol are, as a rule, calm and invitingly clear, particularly during the bathing season. These characteristics make the location suitable for swimming and for activities such as surface diving (snorkeling) to observe marine life near the coast. The Blue Flag distinction, awarded to this beach, recognizes and guarantees the good quality of the waters and sand, as well as the existence of adequate safety conditions, including the presence of lifeguards.
An iconic element in the island's landscape is the Cabo de Santa Maria Lighthouse. Erected in 1851, this lighthouse, approximately 50 meters high, serves as an important landmark, visible from various points. Next to it, the small settlement that gives the island its name has developed, characterized by its brightly colored houses, white, blue, and yellow, which reflect the identity of a community historically linked to maritime activities, such as fishing and bivalve production in the Ria Formosa. On certain occasions, it is possible to visit the interior of the lighthouse and access the top for a panoramic view of the island and the Algarve coastline.
