Praia da Galé is situated in the Galé area, which belongs to the locality of Guia, in the municipality of Albufeira. This unique beach is marked by the presence of a cliff that naturally divides it into two distinct parts: the western side (poente) and the eastern side (nascente). It is possible to move between these two sections via stairs that traverse the rock formation. The western side is characterized by an open landscape and a large expanse of sand, while the eastern side is more enclosed by the surrounding cliffs.
The sands of Praia da Galé present distinct characteristics depending on the area. On the western side, the sandy strip is quite wide and extends along the coast, offering a vast space. The landscape on this side includes the presence of dunes. On the eastern side, confined by the cliffs, the sand is narrower. This area is rich in rock formations which, during low tide, create natural rock pools and small caves, adding a particular scenic element.
The water at Praia da Galé is renowned for its good quality, an aspect that frequently allows it to be distinguished with the Blue Flag. The beach is sought after by both foreign visitors and Portuguese families, resulting in a lively atmosphere, especially during the summer months. The combination of the extensive sandy area to the west with the rocks and cliffs to the east offers varied scenery for visitors. The end of the day is particularly appreciated by many due to the sunset view.
The name "Galé" associated with this beach has an origin that dates back to a local legend. Popular tradition holds that the name derives from the shipwreck of a galley, a type of ancient vessel, which is said to have occurred off this coast. This story confers a symbolic trait to the identity of the place.
