Culatra Beach is situated on the Atlantic-facing coast of Culatra Island, one of the barrier islands that are part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, in the Algarve. Although the island administratively belongs to the municipality of Faro, the beach is generally accessed from the village of Culatra, located on the lagoon side of the same island. Its geographical position offers a vast sandy beach in contrast to the lagoon environment of the Ria Formosa on the other side of the island.
This location is known for its extensive sandy area, which stretches for several kilometers along the island's coastline. The vastness of the beach allows visitors to always find a tranquil spot, even during peak periods. Walking east, moving away from the closest access points, reveals practically deserted stretches of beach, ideal for those seeking greater isolation and contact with nature.
The waters at Culatra Beach are frequently calm and notably transparent during summer. This tranquility and clarity make the beach particularly inviting for swimming. The quality of the water and sand is a highlighted aspect, contributing to a pure and natural environment, conducive to relaxation and activities like swimming.
Access to the beach from the village of Culatra is via a wooden boardwalk. This elevated path crosses the dune system that protects the island's interior. Traversing the boardwalk offers views over the coastal vegetation and dunes, being an integral part of the experience of reaching the beach, before the vast ocean horizon fully reveals itself.
Located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, Culatra Beach maintains a significant natural environment. The absence of vehicular traffic on the island contributes to the serenity of the location. The focus is on the coastal landscape, the extensive dunes that accompany the sandy beach, and the feeling of being in a place where nature plays a central role.
