Situated in the Ponta da Piedade area, in Lagos, Praia da Boneca is part of a stretch of the Algarve coast known for its dramatic rock formations and golden and ocher cliffs. It is one of the small coves that make up this scenic landscape, facing east on the promontory.

Origin of the Name

Local tradition holds that the name "Praia da Boneca" (Doll's Beach) originated from the resemblance of one of the nearby rock formations to the silhouette of a woman. This natural element, shaped by erosion, gave identity to this small cove.

Natural Characteristics

This beach is characterized by a small sandy area, nestled between imposing ocher-colored cliffs. The surrounding landscape includes notable rock formations, such as natural arches, caves, and a 'leixão' (an isolated rock in the sea) a short distance from the coast.

The cliffs surrounding the cove and the offshore 'leixão' offer significant protection from the wind, creating a more sheltered environment within the small bay.

Tidal Dynamics

Due to its size, the sandy area of Praia da Boneca is significantly affected by the tide. During high tide, the sandy strip is almost completely covered by water.

Pedestrian access is limited and generally only possible from the neighboring beach to the north, by walking through the water during low tide. Otherwise, access is by sea.

Geological and Natural Aspects

The cliffs surrounding the beach are formed by carbonate rocks, shaped by erosion over time, creating the observed diversity of reliefs. Traces of marine fossils can be found in these rock formations.

Safety Note

Due to the nature of the coastal cliffs, there is a possibility of rockfalls or stone detachment. Visitors are advised to maintain a safe distance from the cliffs when on the sandy area.
