Balaia Beach is located in the Balaia area, within the municipality of Albufeira. It is situated to the east of Albufeira city center and to the west of the locality of Olhos de Água.
It is a beach adjacent to the well-known Santa Eulália Beach, functioning almost as an eastward extension of it, albeit with its own distinct characteristics.
This beach is nestled within a small bay, which is naturally shaped by the low cliffs flanking it. The coastline is punctuated by various rock formations that contribute to the scenic aesthetic of the location.
The bay's shape provides a relatively sheltered environment, distinct from more open coastal areas.
Balaia Beach's sandy area changes its shape and extent according to the tidal cycle. During high tide, the sand strip is more compact and limited to the main area near the access point.
However, with low tide, the receding water reveals natural passages between the rocks. By exploring these passages, it's possible to discover small indentations and additional pockets of sand, hidden along the base of the cliff in the eastward direction.
Locally, this beach is sometimes known by a different name: Praia do Bico das Silvas. Although less common, this designation can be heard among those who know the area well.
The main access leading to Balaia Beach's sandy area is via a wooden structure, either a staircase or a boardwalk, which descends the cliff face. This point allows for comfortable arrival at the bathing area.
