Arrifana Beach is located at the base of a cove, nestled between high, dark cliffs. It is close to the small village of the same name, which stretches up the hillside. Access to the beach is via a steep road that descends to the sandy area. From the top of the cliffs flanking the beach, the coastal landscape and the size of the cove can be seen.
The sandy area of Arrifana Beach stretches for several hundred meters and, although it can be narrow at high tide, offers space to enjoy the sun. The surrounding cliffs, mostly composed of schist, provide natural shelter, making the beach less exposed to the strong winds characteristic of this coast. The beach is recognized for its quality, displaying the Blue Flag, and has lifeguard surveillance during the bathing season.
The sea at Arrifana Beach is particularly known for its consistent waves, making it a highly sought-after spot for surfing, both for beginners and more experienced surfers. The wave conditions are suitable for sports activities for much of the year. In addition to surfing, the area, especially at the northern end, is also used for diving activities.
At the southern end of the beach, a distinctive natural element emerges from the sea: the rock known as Pedra da Agulha (Needle Rock). Its vertical shape gives it its name and marks the landscape of the place. The cliffs surrounding the beach themselves feature interesting formations shaped by the action of the sea and wind, contributing to the scenic beauty of the cove.
At the top of the cliff north of the beach, lie the remains of the old Arrifana Fort. This structure, originally built in the 17th century to defend the coast and fishing activity, was affected by the 1755 earthquake and subsequently abandoned, with only its ruins and the entrance, which has been restored, remaining today. The fort site offers an impressive panoramic view over Arrifana Beach and the coastline, serving as a privileged observation point. Adjacent to the northern cliff, there is also a small harbor used by fishermen.
