Angrinha Beach is nestled next to the picturesque village of Ferragudo, in the municipality of Lagoa. Situated on the eastern bank of the Arade River estuary, this beach benefits from the natural protection of the river bar, which influences the characteristics of its waters. It also marks the natural southern border with Praia Grande (Grand Beach), separated by a promontory where a significant historical element stands.
Its strategic position offers unobstructed views over the Arade estuary and the dynamic landscape of Portimão Marina, located on the opposite bank. Its proximity to the village center grants it particular accessibility, while maintaining a distinct atmosphere.
The sandy expanse of Angrinha Beach boasts a considerable length, shaped by the influence of the Arade River estuary. It is a wide space, framed by a line of cliffs showing signs of erosion over time. These rocky walls host vegetation adapted to the coastal environment, adding texture and color to the landscape.
The waters here are generally calm, a result of the protection afforded by its location within the estuary. A small stream empties into the southern end of the beach, contributing to the uniqueness of its ecosystem. At the northern end, a pier shelters a few boats, a visible vestige of the local fishing tradition.
One of the most distinctive elements of Angrinha Beach is the imposing presence of the Fort of São João do Arade. This historical structure, built in the 17th century, is located on the promontory that separates Angrinha from the neighboring Praia Grande. Its original function was to defend the entrance to the Arade River estuary, in conjunction with the Fortress of Santa Catarina on the opposite bank, in Portimão.
The fort lends a unique character to the beach's setting, serving as a notable visual landmark. Currently, it is private property and not open to visitors, but its presence enriches the coastal landscape, connecting the present to the region's defensive past.
Angrinha Beach is characterized by a generally calmer atmosphere compared to other beaches in the area, frequently attracting local residents. It is a place sought after by those who value serenity and a slower pace. Its connection to the fishing village of Ferragudo is palpable, especially in the northern part of the sandy area, where fishermen's huts and anchored boats can still be seen.
A walkway borders part of the beach, facilitating movement and allowing visitors to appreciate the estuary and village landscape. This environment, less focused on mass tourism, invites a relaxing late afternoon or a stroll by the water, observing the river activity and views towards Portimão.
