Located in the Espartal area, in the municipality of Aljezur, Amoreira Beach is part of the vast protected area of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. This coastal beach is distinguished by its geographical position at the mouth of the Aljezur Stream, where the river meets the sea. Its natural surroundings are marked by imposing cliffs to the north and gentler, greener slopes to the south.
Amoreira Beach features an extensive sandy area, bordered by a vast dune system. One of its most notable features is the presence of the mouth of the Aljezur Stream, which here forms an estuary of remarkable natural beauty. This peculiarity allows for both fresh, calmer, and temperate waters, and salty Atlantic Ocean waters on the same beach.
During low tide, the landscape transforms with the exposure of extensive lagoons on the sandy beach, whose waters tend to be warmer than the sea. It is also at this tide phase that fossilized rock formations are revealed, adding geological interest to the landscape.
The ends of the beach are delimited by cliffs characteristic of the Vicentine Coast. To the north, an imposing cliff rises, composed of dark-toned schist and greywacke, predominantly grey and black. To the south, although the slope is gentler and covered by vegetation, beautiful rock formations are also found, which are remnants of ancient dunes that have fossilized over time.
There is a popular tradition associated with the silhouette of the northern cliff, in which many locals see the shape of a sleeping giant.
The natural surroundings of Amoreira Beach, integrated into the Natural Park, constitute a habitat for various fauna species. With some tranquility and attention, it is possible to observe birds such as the grey heron or the colorful kingfisher, which frequent the banks of the stream.
The otter, though more reserved, can also be seen moving through the waters and riparian vegetation, especially during quieter hours.
The environment of Amoreira Beach offers contrasts that appeal to different visitors. The areas of the stream and the lagoons formed at low tide provide a more tranquil and safe space for swimming, being particularly appreciated by those seeking calmer waters. Low tide also invites exploration of the small rock pools left on the sandy beach.
For those seeking more dynamic activities, the waves in the open sea area are often suitable for surfing and bodyboarding, attracting practitioners of these sports. The area surrounding the beach is also traversed by segments of walking trails, such as those that are part of the Vicentine Route, offering the opportunity for coastal walks and panoramic views of the coastal landscape and the surrounding green valleys.
