The Gate of Sant'Ana is located in the Fishermen's Quarter, an area that preserves the traditional charm of Albufeira. Positioned as an old access point to the historic center, this structure serves as a transition between what was the walled city and the current urban fabric. By passing through it, visitors step into a place that was once one of the essential entry points of old Albufeira.
This ancient portal is one of three accesses that existed to the Castle of Albufeira, a fortress that defended the city in medieval times. Its importance lies in the fact that it is one of the few visible remnants of the defensive system that once surrounded the urban cluster. Crossing the Gate of Sant'Ana is, in a way, crossing a threshold in time, feeling the solidity of the defensive architecture that protected its inhabitants.
The Gate of Sant'Ana owes its name to an old chapel dedicated to Saint Anne, which was located in its vicinity. Unfortunately, this chapel, like much of the city, was destroyed during the devastating 1755 Earthquake. Although the original chapel has disappeared, the name of the gate has endured, serving as a tangible link to the history and resilience of Albufeira. The veneration of Saint Anne was later re-established in another location, but the memory of the original chapel and its connection to this portal remain alive in the designation of the site.
