Old Bridge of Silves

Category: Civil Architecture > Bridge

District: Faro > Silves > Silves > Cerro de São Miguel

Location

The Old Bridge of Silves is situated over the Arade River, harmoniously integrated into the urban landscape of the locality. It is located in the area known as Cerro de São Miguel and currently functions as an exclusively pedestrian passage, connecting the riverbanks and allowing for peaceful circulation. Its position offers pleasant perspectives of the waterway and its surrounding embrace.

Crossing it allows one to appreciate the riverside serenity and how this historic element fits into the daily life of the town of Silves, inviting a slower pace to explore the area.

A Bridge of Centuries

Although sometimes referred to as "Roman Bridge," the structure of the Old Bridge of Silves observed today primarily originates from the 15th century. The first documents alluding to its reconstruction date back to 1439, with the work considered completed around 1473. However, it is plausible that a Roman bridge existed in the same location, given Silves' ancient importance as a crossroads.

Over the centuries, the bridge underwent various restoration interventions, notably in the 17th century and in 1716, which, while strengthening its solidity, preserved its original design. In the mid-20th century, with the construction of a more modern bridge nearby, the Old Bridge assumed its current role as an exclusive pedestrian crossing. In 2020, its historical and cultural value was officially recognized with its classification as a Monument of Public Interest.

Architectural Details

The Old Bridge of Silves is characterized by its five perfect arches, which rest on robust pillars, protected by cutwaters, elements that break the force of the current. Its construction was carried out with Silves sandstone, a local rock that gives the bridge a particular hue and a strong connection to the region's geology. The form of the masonry and the presence of various stonemasons' marks, signs left by medieval stonemasons, are visible testimonies to its age and the construction techniques of the era.

Its structural elements and the art of raising them reflect a style that is in harmony with other historic buildings in the locality itself, showing a period of great constructive activity in medieval Silves.

A Point of Contemplation

Traversing the Old Bridge of Silves provides a moment of pause, an invitation to contemplation. Its length, approximately 76 meters, and the fact that it is exclusively pedestrian, contribute to an atmosphere of tranquility, ideal for appreciating the riverside landscape. It is a place that stimulates reflection on the passage of time and the lasting relevance of this connection for the community of Silves.

Its distinct silhouette and picturesque appearance make it a remarkable visual element, significantly contributing to the charm of the town and offering a unique perspective on the relationship between its historical heritage and the natural beauty of the Arade River.
