The Pego do Inferno Waterfall is situated on the Asseca Stream, near the village of Estanqueira, in the municipality of Tavira. It is integrated into an area of natural characteristics, somewhat removed from urban centers, typical of the Algarve barrocal landscape.
The waterfall is characterized by a moderate drop, approximately three meters high. At its base, it forms a lagoon whose color stands out with olive-green tones. This particular coloration of the waters is related to their depth, as well as the composition of the terrain and the presence of vegetation on the banks and at the bottom.
The unique appearance of the Pego do Inferno Waterfall is due to its formation in a rock known as calcareous tufa. This type of rock is created by the accumulation of calcium carbonate that precipitates from mineral-rich waters of karstic origin, giving rise to distinctive geological structures in watercourses.
In times past, Pego do Inferno was a site prepared to receive visitors, featuring access structures and support areas for enjoying the lagoon. However, following a fire around 2012 that damaged these facilities, the site ceased to be maintained in an organized manner. Currently, it is a point visited for its natural and less-intervened environment, sought by those who value the experience in a wilder space.
There are legends associated with the Pego do Inferno lagoon that speak of immeasurable and mysterious depths. Although these stories enrich the mystique of the place, measurements indicate that the lagoon's actual depth is around seven meters.
