Situated in a quiet and natural area, a few kilometers from the city of Lagos, the Lagos Zoo is located in the Monte das Galegas area. Its location, close to the towns of Barão de São João and Bensafrim, offers a serene environment away from the urban hustle and bustle, ideal for a day in contact with nature and its inhabitants.
Inaugurated in November 2000, the Lagos Zoo was conceived with a clear vocation for conservation and environmental education. The space's motto is "Conserve, Educate, and Protect," dedicating itself to providing its visitors with an opportunity to learn about wildlife, emphasizing the importance of protecting species and their natural habitats.
At the Lagos Zoo, it is possible to observe a vast collection of wildlife. The park houses approximately 1500 animals, representing about 150 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish, from various continents. Complementarily, the zoo's botanical area features over 200 diverse plant species.
Among its inhabitants, notable groups include one of the largest troops of capuchin monkeys in the world, with over thirty individuals. The park also plays an active role in the preservation of endangered species, as evidenced by the birth of a pygmy hippopotamus, a species originating from Liberia and at imminent risk of extinction.
In addition to observing animals in their enclosures, the Lagos Zoo offers different forms of interaction and immersion. A sixty-meter Flight Tunnel allows for a unique proximity to various birds in full freedom of movement. On the Primate Islands, visitors find settings that recreate the natural environments of these species.
For children, the Farm provides direct and educational contact with domestic animals, including the unique Dwarf Zebus. This space reinforces the park's educational aspect, allowing for practical and engaging learning.
The design of the Lagos Zoo is noteworthy for how its spaces were created to replicate the appropriate environments for each species. This careful planning contributes to the animals' well-being and offers visitors an immersive experience in a setting that values nature, with attention to the landscape integration of the park's different areas.
