Parque da Mina is located in the Barracão area, within the town and municipality of Monchique. Nestled in the Algarve mountains, this location offers a natural setting and views encompassing the surrounding landscape. Its position allows visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the mountains, in an environment distinct from the coastal bustle of the Algarve.
At the heart of Parque da Mina, visitors can step back in time and discover the ways of life from yesteryear. One of the central points is an 18th-century manor house, designed to function as a lived-in and dynamic space, not a static museum. Each compartment is presented as if the family who resided there still did, with objects and environments that faithfully portray daily life from several decades ago. This approach allows direct contact with the rural way of life and the daily routines of the people of the Algarve mountains.
The park is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the traditions and cultural heritage of the Monchique region. Visitors can observe recreations of various trades and activities that marked daily local life. Among them, highlights include the grocery store, shoemaker's shop, carpentry, and sewing. It is also possible to learn about ancestral production processes, such as medronho distillation, agriculture, artisanal bread and honey making, and the traditional extraction of ore and charcoal. Furthermore, the route includes the exhibition of old means of transport, enriching the time-travel experience.
In addition to its historical and cultural value, Parque da Mina is equally rich in natural elements. Visitors have the opportunity to interact with local flora and fauna, including various farm animals that inhabit the space. A viewpoint allows for wide views over the park and the surrounding mountain landscape, while a suspension bridge over a waterfall offers a unique perspective on the aquatic formations and vegetation. The park also features a wetland area, which contributes to the ecological diversity of the natural environment and complements the exploration of natural heritage.
