Located in Horta da Areia, this mansion is situated in the heart of Faro city, in an area with a strong identity, close to the ancient medieval walls. Its position in the historic center gives it a striking visibility, fitting harmoniously into the urban landscape.
Palacete Belmarço is a remarkable example of the revivalist and eclectic architecture that characterized Faro in the early 20th century. Designed by the renowned architect Manuel Joaquim Norte Júnior, the building was completed in 1917 and is today recognized as a Monument of Public Interest. Its construction was part of a period of urban renewal in Faro, seeking to mirror the architectural trends then in vogue in the capital, Lisbon.
Observing Palacete Belmarço, attention is drawn to its richly elaborated main facade. The turret, rising from one of the building's corners, is a distinctive element, standing out in its surroundings. In the various sections of the facade, we find windows with ornate frames and wrought-iron railings, as well as a main door in the Beaux-Arts style. A detail that catches the eye is the sculpture of a feminine face, decorated with bows and garlands of flowers, which embellishes the facade.
Inside, the decoration is equally meticulous, with an interesting combination of revivalist styles and Art Nouveau elements. Particularly noteworthy are the two tile panels, dated 1916 and authored by the artist Pinto, which depict national monuments. The staircase leading to the upper floor, with its iron structure in the Art Nouveau style, is another detail that contributes to the mansion's uniqueness.
Built at the behest of the wealthy merchant Manuel Belmarço to be his residence, this mansion is a testament to the bourgeois architecture of the era. Throughout its history, the building has had different uses, but it has always maintained its relevance as one of the most notable properties in the city. Its recent restoration aimed to restore its original appearance, both externally and internally, allowing Palacete Belmarço to continue being an emblematic presence in Faro and occasionally hosting cultural initiatives.
