This museum nucleus is located in the area known as Arraial Ferreira Neto, a historic site associated with tuna fishing, in the vicinity of Tavira Island. It is situated next to the Ria Formosa channel, which provides access to the island.

Being positioned in this location gives the nucleus a direct context with the maritime and lagoon scenery where tuna fishing activity intensely unfolded, offering visitors an immediate connection to the environment of the era.

The Memory of Tuna Fishing:

The Tuna Fishing Museum Nucleus is dedicated to preserving and sharing knowledge about an activity that was a pillar of Tavira's economy and identity for many years. It explores the historical importance of tuna fishing, particularly the 'almadrava' technique, a complex and collaborative capture method that required great organization and expertise.

It tells the story of the fishing community that formed around this endeavor, portraying the lives of fishermen and their families in the arraial itself, highlighting the social and economic impact this activity had on the Algarve and Tavira.

The Exhibition Space:

Inside the nucleus, visitors discover various elements that help visualize the daily life and procedures of tuna fishing. The space presents reconstitutions, including a detailed model of the 'armação', the intricate system of nets and cables mounted in the sea, and miniatures of the boats used.

It is possible to observe original objects that were part of the equipment and fishing gear, as well as typical fishermen's costumes. The visit is enriched with the exhibition of historical videos showing real moments of the activity, from the preparation of the 'almadrava' to the tuna capture and life in the arraial.

A Legacy at the Historic Site:

There is added symbolic value in the fact that this museum nucleus is installed precisely in the place where the old cooperative and the arraial of Armação do Arraial Ferreira Neto operated. This was one of the nerve centers of tuna fishing in the region.

Visiting the nucleus at this historic site allows those who explore it to feel the atmosphere of the place where generations of men and women lived in relation to the sea and this unique fishing activity, connecting the told history with the physical space where it happened.
