The Municipal Museum of Archaeology of Albufeira is located in the city's historic center, in Praça da República. This location is part of what is known as the Fishermen's Quarter, maintaining the traditional atmosphere of the old town.
The building housing the museum, formerly the Municipal Council's headquarters, features characteristics of Algarve urban architecture. It is built on two floors, and its position within the urban fabric suggests a strong connection or visual proximity to the coastal area and the sea.
This museum offers an opportunity to discover Albufeira's long and rich history. The permanent exhibitions guide visitors through time, addressing various crucial periods for the formation of the region's identity, from its most remote origins.
The exhibition's chronological journey covers Prehistory, the Roman occupation period, the Islamic era, and the Modern Age, extending up to the 17th century. Each thematic section presents artifacts and information illustrating the life, activities, and cultural influences of each era.
The museum's collection gathers a set of archaeological pieces found in the municipality of Albufeira, essential for understanding its past. A significant part of this initial collection was assembled by Father José Manuel Semedo de Azevedo, an important figure in the preservation of local heritage.
Among the exhibited finds are artifacts originating from sites such as the Roman Villa of Retorta, the Morgado da Lameira necropolis, and the former Matriz Church of Albufeira. These elements, together with others discovered in the city and its surroundings, allow a glimpse into the different historical layers that compose the territory.
