Situated in the rural area of Estiramanténs, parish of Santo Estêvão, in the municipality of Tavira, the Monte da Guerreira Museum is located on a traditional hill integrated into a landscape marked by agricultural fields, vegetation typical of the Algarve's barrocal, and a tranquility characteristic of the interior. The surroundings offer a serene experience, far from the urban pace, with open views over cultivated lands and rural paths.
The museum resulted from the personal dedication of José Mendonça Furtado, who for many years amassed a vast collection of pieces related to religious art and decorative arts from the 17th and 18th centuries. The collection included oratories, sacred images, worked furniture, crystals, ivories, and other antique objects, organized in several rooms of the hill.
Some archaeological elements were also part of the collection, including Roman inscriptions of historical interest. A portion of the collection was later integrated into the Municipal Museum of Tavira, where it is currently being inventoried.
Although no longer in its original state, the space retains the characteristic atmosphere of a privately initiated museum, with marks of the personal history of its builder. A visit to the site still allows for an understanding of the relationship between the territory, traditional architecture, and the care dedicated to the preservation of heritage.
The Monte da Guerreira remains a testament to the importance of individual memory in the cultural appreciation of the region, in a setting where natural landscape and material heritage intersect authentically.
