Situated in the riverside area of the city of Portimão, the Portimão Museum occupies the former premises of one of the most emblematic canning factories that, in other times, shaped the local landscape and economy. Its location offers a unique perspective on the city's relationship with the Arade River, a central element in the community's life throughout the centuries. It is located in an accessible area of Portimão, inviting a peaceful visit to explore the region's heritage.
The Portimão Museum is housed in what was once the prominent Feu Hermanos Canning Factory, one of the pillars of the canning industry that propelled Portimão's identity. This space, carefully rehabilitated and inaugurated as a museum in 2008, allows visitors to understand the grandeur and daily life of an activity that, for decades, was the city's economic engine. The industrial architecture of the building, in itself, is a museum piece, offering an authentic setting for the historical narrative that unfolds there.
The Museum's permanent exhibition, titled «Portimão, Territory and Identity», invites an engaging journey through the history of the municipality. Exploring the spaces of the old factory, one discovers the richness of the industrial and ethnographic heritage, with special attention to fishing, shipbuilding, and the art of canning, which once filled the city's days. The factory environment is recreated through elements and figures that illustrate daily work, offering a close look at the lives of the men and women who toiled here. The collection also includes important archaeological testimonies, some from underwater excavations in the Arade River, and two historical vessels, which underline Portimão's indelible connection to the sea.
Since its opening, the Portimão Museum has been distinguished for its innovative approach and the quality of its museological project. It has received prestigious awards, such as "Museum of the Year" in 2010, awarded by the European Museum Forum, and the DASA World of Work Award in 2011. This international recognition validates its vocation to tell the story of a community, its territory, and its identity, through a valuable heritage that ranges from archaeology to industrial and maritime life. It is a space designed to share and preserve local memory, making it accessible and interesting for all who visit.
