The Monchique Mountains rise in the western part of the Algarve, being a striking geographical feature in the region's landscape. Its highest point, known as Fóia, reaches an altitude of 902 meters and is located in the Monchique area. From this summit, on days of good visibility, it is possible to appreciate a vast panorama extending over a large part of the Algarve coast, from Faro to Cabo de São Vicente, and to glimpse the Serra da Arrábida to the north.
Given its proximity to the sea, the Monchique Mountains benefit from a humid subtropical climate, characterized by abundant rainfall and mild temperatures. These conditions favor the development of rich and diverse vegetation. Among the tree species found here, stand out the Monchique oak, the Portuguese laurel, and others less common in the southern region of the country, such as the chestnut, the cork oak, and the sessile oak. The mountain range is also the source of several streams and rivers that feed the local hydrography, including the Ribeira de Seixe and the Ribeira de Aljezur.
The geological structure of the Monchique Mountains is notable for the presence of foyaite, a rock of magmatic origin. This geological particularity significantly contributes to the fertility of the mountain's soils. The volcanic nature of the rock, coupled with the high humidity of the climate, creates a terrain exceptionally conducive to the growth of the varied flora that characterizes this mountain.
