Church of Saint Sebastian

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Faro > Monchique > Monchique > Ceiceira

Location

The Church of Saint Sebastian is located in Monchique, Algarve. Situated in the Ceiceira area, in the southern part of the village, its discreet presence invites a peaceful exploration of the surrounding streets, allowing for an immersion in the local atmosphere, away from the central hustle and bustle.

Historical Legacy

This religious building dates back to the 16th century, with its construction likely completed in 1573. Its erection was probably driven by a determination of King D. Sebastião, who wished to see a church dedicated to Saint Sebastian erected at the main entrance of every settlement. This royal connection bestows a particular historical value upon the site, bearing witness to the regal influence on the urban and religious landscape of the time.

Architecture and Interior Highlights

Outwardly, the Church of Saint Sebastian exhibits a design with simple lines and a modest appearance. However, upon crossing its portal, the visitor is met with an interior that surprises with its richness. There, an impressive baldachin is revealed, supported by columns with elaborate and unique ornamentation. These elements, along with the main altarpiece in Rococo style gilded carving, were largely integrated into the temple in the 18th century, originating from the former Convent of Our Lady of Exile. On the main altar, a notable image of Our Lady of Exile also stands out, a beautiful 17th-century sculpture that also originated from the same convent.
