The Algarve International Circuit is located in Sítio do Escampadinho, in the tranquil parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, part of the municipality of Portimão. Situated approximately sixteen kilometers from the center of Portimão city, the venue is nestled within the Algarve landscape, characterized by naturally undulating terrain that influences the track's unique features.
Inaugurated in 2008, the Algarve International Circuit was designed by architect Ricardo Pina, conceived to host various motorsports disciplines. The main track, approximately 4.6 kilometers long, is known for its undulating nature, which includes significant descents and challenging corners. This configuration provides a dynamic and demanding layout, appreciated by both drivers and motorsport enthusiasts, reminiscent of the complexity of historic circuits.
Since its opening, the circuit has quickly established itself as one of the most relevant international circuits. Its track has hosted major events, including rounds of the Superbike World Championship, the European Le Mans Series, A1 Grand Prix, and FIA GT. In recent years, it has notably hosted the Formula 1 World Championship and MotoGP, attracting prominent figures from global car and motorcycle racing. The track is recognized for its characteristics that favor overtaking, contributing to thrilling races.
A striking aspect of the Algarve International Circuit is the tribute to Craig Jones, a British motorcycle racer. One of the circuit's corners was named after him, and at the main entrance to the circuit, a roundabout displays a monument representing him on his motorbike. This landscape sculpture, created by Paula Hespanha and Manuel Pedro Ferreira Chaves, symbolizes speed and passion for the sport, integrating with the surrounding architecture and serving as a point of interest for visitors.
In addition to elite competitions, the Algarve International Circuit also offers opportunities for visitors to experience the track environment. Within the complex, visitors can find a karting track and an off-road track, providing driving experiences at different levels. Such infrastructures allow visitors to deepen their engagement with the world of motorsports, whether through high-performance car driving experiences or more accessible activities like karting.
