Located in the parish of Odeleite, in the municipality of Castro Marim, the Mata Nacional das Terras da Ordem (National Forest of the Lands of the Order) covers approximately 1297 hectares and is integrated into the eastern slope of the Serra do Caldeirão. This area has diverse vegetation and serves as a habitat for various species of fauna and flora typical of the Mediterranean climate.
The forest is dominated by the stone pine, and along the watercourses, there are species such as ash trees, oleanders, and eucalyptus. In the higher areas, holm oaks, carob trees, and olive trees still exist, among other species adapted to the climate and soil of the region.
An area of 820 hectares of the forest has been designated as a Refuge Area for game fauna, especially for migratory species, promoting the preservation of biodiversity and ecological balance.
Originally associated with the Order of Christ, the forest has historical roots dating back to the period when it belonged to the Commandery of Castro Marim. In 1967, it passed into the public domain and has since been managed by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests.
The National Forest offers tranquility and natural beauty, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and nature observation. The area also has old restored watermills, such as the Moinho das Pernadas, which highlight the historical and cultural value of the site.
In recent years, the forest has been the target of reforestation and fire control actions. The objective of the management is to maintain the balance between forest productivity and its sustainability, preserving biodiversity and water resources.
