The Barão de São João National Forest is located near the village of Barão de São João, in the municipality of Lagos, in the Algarve region of Portugal.
This forest is recognized as an important natural monument in the area, offering a rich biodiversity with various tree species typical of the Mediterranean climate.
Classified as a protected area, the Barão de São João Forest is a refuge for various species of fauna, especially animals associated with hunting.
The forest has a picnic area, ideal for picnics, and various sports facilities. Visitors can enjoy a maintenance circuit with obstacles and six trails for hiking and cycling.
Inside the forest is the Menir da Pedra Branca, a prehistoric monument dating back to the Neo-Chalcolithic period, interesting for history and archaeology enthusiasts.
An interpretive center is being developed in the former forest ranger's house, which aims to educate visitors about the local flora and fauna, through a partnership between the Lagos City Council and the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests.
In June 2020, the forest suffered a significant fire that affected more than 2,000 hectares of forest in several surrounding areas, but recovery efforts are being implemented.
The Barão de São João National Forest is an excellent destination for those who enjoy nature and are looking for a quiet place to enjoy outdoor activities.
