The Jardim dos Amuados (Garden of the Sulkers) is situated in the historic area of Loulé, in the district corresponding to São Clemente. Strategically located atop a section of the city's ancient wall, this green space benefits from an elevated position, offering a unique perspective over Loulé's most traditional urban surroundings.
The construction of this garden dates back to the final years of the 19th century, marking a phase of urban transformation for the city. It was built upon remnants of the old cemetery and a portion of the local main church's churchyard, elements that give it a deep connection to the locality's past. From 1883 onwards, the space was enclosed with walls and gates, and by 1890, its tree-planting gave it the appearance of a garden, inviting visitors to linger and observe.
The designation "Jardim dos Amuados" is a distinctive feature of this place, although it is relatively recent, having been adopted only in 1948. Its origin is popular and suggests a touch of singularity: it is said that the name came from the particular arrangement of some of its benches, grouped in pairs and facing away from each other, giving the impression that they were "sulking" or angry.
Despite its compact dimensions, the Jardim dos Amuados provides an atmosphere of remarkable serenity. At its highest point, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view extending over Loulé's urban landscape. The generous tree cover, with large specimens, offers abundant shade and a welcoming refuge, making it an ideal spot for moments of quietude and contemplation, especially inviting on warmer days.
