Largo de Santa Ana is located in a higher area of Tavira, in the Santa Maria and Santiago zone. Its position offers a particular perspective over the city, providing a tranquil environment and a certain distance from the usual movement of the urban center.
This square is intrinsically linked to its hermitage, one of the oldest temples in Tavira, whose roots date back to the Middle Ages. Originally, this hermitage belonged to the Order of Santiago. During the first half of the 18th century, it underwent significant interventions, having been adapted to serve as the chapel of the Palace of the Governor and Captain-General of the Algarve, thus conferring a notable historical and institutional dimension to the square.
Largo de Santa Ana provides access to an element of considerable artistic and architectural value. The hermitage, of simple construction with a single nave and chancel, is particularly relevant for the altarpieces it preserves inside. The altarpiece of the chancel is a noteworthy example, featuring beautiful national style gilded carving, complemented by wooden images, which enrich the cultural and historical atmosphere of the place.
