Trail of the Seven Hanging Valleys

Category: Nature > Route

District: Faro > Lagoa > Caramujeira > Praia da Marinha

Location

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is located in the area of Praia da Marinha, in the locality of Caramujeira, municipality of Lagoa. This pedestrian trail unfolds along the coastline, offering unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean and the dramatic Algarve coastline. Its elevated position on the cliffs provides a unique perspective on the coastal landscape, marked by distinct geological formations.

The route extends linearly for approximately 5.7 kilometers, connecting Praia da Marinha, to the east, with Praia de Vale Centianes, to the west. Along this path, walkers are enveloped by a natural setting where the imposing golden-hued cliffs contrast with the turquoise-blue sea.

Geology and the Origin of the Name

The name "Seven Hanging Valleys" derives from a notable geological particularity of the region. Historically, this coast was traversed by watercourses that flowed into the sea through valleys. However, due to the intense and prolonged action of marine and fluvial erosion, the coastline has receded significantly over millions of years. This erosion process advanced more rapidly than the deepening of the watercourses, resulting in valleys that today terminate abruptly at the top of the cliffs, suspended above sea level.

This landscape is a testament to the powerful force of nature. The interaction of slightly acidic rainwater with the limestone of the cliffs has, over time, sculpted unusual rock formations, including caves and cavities that can be observed from various points along the trail. This erosion also gave rise to "algarves," which are natural sinkholes that open in the ground and connect to the sea.

The Trail Experience

Walking the Seven Hanging Valleys is an immersion in a natural setting of great beauty. The path winds along the clifftops, where coastal vegetation, such as junipers and Aleppo pines, demonstrates a remarkable ability to adapt to arid conditions and persistent sea winds, sometimes presenting unique and contorted shapes.

Along the route, walkers encounter natural arches, sculpted by wave action, and can glimpse some of the coastal caves that dot the shoreline. It is important to note that, for safety reasons, there are fences around some of the more significant natural openings, preventing direct access to their interior from the trail, but not diminishing their visual impressiveness. Informative panels distributed along the route contribute to enriching the experience, explaining the geological features, fauna, and flora of the site.

Notes for the Hiker

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, totaling approximately 11.4 kilometers when done round trip, presents a medium to high difficulty level. The ground is predominantly natural, with sections of earth and stone, sometimes uneven.

The approximate duration to complete the round-trip route is between three and four hours, depending on each walker's pace and breaks. For a safe and comfortable experience, suitable hiking footwear and light clothing are recommended. It is also advisable to maintain a safe distance from the edge of the cliffs, always respecting existing signs and barriers.
