The Jardim dos Amuados is located in the historic area of Loulé, in the parish of São Clemente. Its position is unique, as it was built on the trace of the old city wall, offering an elevated perspective integrated into the older urban fabric. It is situated at a point that allows an unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape, blending with the historical heritage of the locality.
The creation of this garden dates back to the late 19th century, a period of significant urban transformations. The space we know today as Jardim dos Amuados was formally delimited in 1883, with the construction of walls, railings, and a gate that integrated it into the city's fabric. Shortly after, in 1890, the site was planted with trees, beginning to take its current form. A notable aspect of its past is the fact that it was established on what were once the lands of an old cemetery and part of the atrium of Loulé's main church, giving it a dimension of historical continuity.
Despite its compact dimensions, Jardim dos Amuados is known for the tranquil atmosphere it provides. Its abundant trees, with considerable height, create shaded areas that are particularly inviting on hotter days, making it a pleasant refuge. At the highest point of the garden, a small balcony invites contemplation. From there, it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view over the city of Loulé and the landscape that extends beyond its urban limits, offering a setting for moments of rest and reflection.
The name "Jardim dos Amuados" is one of the most distinctive particularities of this space, although its current designation was only adopted in 1948. Before that, it was known as "Jardim do Largo do Batalhão Sapadores dos Caminhos-de-ferro". The most widespread explanation for the current popular designation lies in the arrangement of its benches, often grouped in pairs and positioned back to back, as if they were "amuados" (sulking) or angry. This peculiarity has become a curious and popular note that is inseparably associated with the garden, contributing to its charm.
