Located in the heart of the village of Bordeira, the Mother Church is a central landmark in this peaceful settlement within the municipality of Aljezur. Its position invites immersion in the village's tranquil atmosphere, framed by the serene landscape that characterizes this area of the Algarve coast.
Built in 1746, the Mother Church of Bordeira has witnessed centuries of local history. Its initial structure was severely affected by the great earthquake of 1755, an event that led to subsequent interventions and shaped it to this day, demonstrating its durability and resilience over time.
The church's exterior reveals a sobriety with lines that evoke a popular Baroque style. An element of particular interest is the old cemetery portal, which displays a striking Manueline design, creating a notable contrast with the overall simplicity of the facade.
Upon entering, the visitor encounters a single-nave space, extending to the chancel, separated by a triumphal arch. The altars, both the main and the side ones, are enriched with Baroque gilded carving, where regional decorative motifs can be observed. The interior houses various images of worship dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries, and also features a remarkable baptismal font, which shares the uniqueness of the Manueline style found on the exterior.
