The church was initially built as a private chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, at the end of the 13th century, by order of Dona Bona, in gratitude for her husband's return from the Eighth Crusade.
The building underwent renovations in the 16th and 18th centuries. It features a Manueline-style portal as the main entrance.
The interior consists of three naves separated by arches supported by columns. It has a 16th-century vault covered with blue and white tiles from the 18th century. The wood carving is characteristic of the Baroque style.
The church houses three altarpieces, one of which is dedicated to the chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in the Baroque style. The other two chapels are dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Francis, with Rococo characteristics.
The chancel is dedicated to Saint Sebastian and is covered with polychrome tile panels in the Baroque style. Inside, there are images of Saint Teresa from the 17th century, Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Margaret from the 18th century, as well as a Manueline baptismal font.
